About the Dart

Steeped in history, the river Dart is enchanting to say the least. With its numerous creeks and eateries, the Dart offers a wonderful venue for your boat. The local beaches of interest include Blackpool Sands where you can drop anchor, swim to shore, and enjoy the culinary delights of the Venus Cafe. There are also the secluded Valley Beach, which is only accessed by land involving a very steep climb, the beautiful long stretch of Slapton Sands, and the charming Salcombe and Torbay. When the weather prevents venturing past the castles, you can enjoy the more sheltered bounds along the river, visiting the nestled inns and cafes. There are the Anchorstone Cafe and the Ferry Boat Inn at Dittisham. At Bow Creek you can find the Maltsters Arms, and Sharpham. Across the river at Stoke Gabriel there is the River Shack. Or just simply cruise up the river to Totnes and enjoy the views this beautiful stretch has to offer.

Our story

Sympathetically nestled just up river from Dittisham opposite Stoke Gabriel is Blackness Marine, a family run company offering comprehensive boating solutions from our stunning location. As third generation farmers we needed to diversify to help make ends meet, so in 2006 we did just that – transforming the riverside area of the farm into a boat yard with track and slipway installation. Well aware of the limited launch and recovery options on the River Dart we felt it would be a good move and with support from Dart Harbour, The Duchy of Cornwall, England Rural Development Programme (through DEFRA), English Nature, The Environment Agency and The European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund, Blackness Marine was born. We are ideally situated to provide a unique facility and pride ourselves on a friendly and flexible approach. We welcome everyone from seafaring sailors to novice folk looking to gain confidence and develop their boating skills, as well as berth holders needing access from this part of the River Dart - To us it matters not, all will be met with a smile and receive the same excellent level of customer service which is the very essence of our business. Our experienced boat yard and admin teams are ready to advise and ensure that you are set up with a package that is just right for you, enabling you to achieve the level of boating you aspire to. At Blackness Marine we are continuously investing in our site facilities, benefiting both our customers and the Dart as a whole, whilst supporting other marine trades on and around the river through the services we provide.
